KMC elections by Dec 7, hints CM Suvendu; announces 1100 crores fund for corporation
The Ministry of Railways has initiated the process to extend Kolkata Metro's Purple Line beyond Joka, with a gazette notification issued for the acquisition of approximately 5,871 square metres of private land across the mouzas of Sarmasterchak, Hanspukuria and Joka. The proposed 1.7-kilometre extension will connect Joka to the IIM Calcutta-Diamond Park area and is intended to improve rapid transit connectivity in the southern outskirts of Kolkata.
To advance the project, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has floated a ₹378 crore infrastructure tender for the construction of the extension. The project includes an elevated viaduct supported by 44 pillars along Diamond Harbour Road and the development of a station box. According to project plans, a parcel of Public Works Department land located about 100 metres beyond the IIM Calcutta campus has been identified for the new metro station.
Construction is scheduled to commence after the required land and right-of-way are handed over, with the project targeted for completion within 30 months. The station box is being designed to accommodate future expansion toward Diamond Park. Once subsequent phases are completed, the Purple Line is planned to operate as an 18-kilometre corridor linking Diamond Park with Eden Gardens in central Kolkata. The extension is expected to improve connectivity for commuters, students and travellers by integrating with other metro corridors through interchanges in the city network.
